6 Beaches to Visit on a Central Dalmatian Sailing Route

Summer is fast approaching; you have booked your sailing holiday and now it is time to start planning your sailing itinerary. Even though the point of a sailing holiday is to spend time on your yacht, it is still good to know where to find some of the best beaches on your central Dalmatian sailing route – especially if you have kids who want to stretch their legs and run around.

Zlatni Rat, island Brač It’s almost impossible not to start a “best beaches” list without first mentioning Zlatni Rat beach. Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) is easily one of the most photographed and photogenic beaches in Croatia. Thanks to its unique formation and brilliant turquoise waters, Zlatni Rat has found itself on the cover of many magazines and is a must-visit beach for travellers and sailors alike. Don’t be fooled by the picture or “golden horn” though, it is a fine-pebbled beach, not sandy. Zlatni Rat is particularly busy and is also famous for kite surfing and windsurfing; so, pay attention when sailing by. However, it is a perfect beach for children – especially with the water park and various water-sport activities on offer.

Velika Plaža, Omiš Omiš is an old town nestled at the foot of two mountain ranges and alongside the lush green Cetina River. Omiš is a lesser-known destination and because it is on the mainland, many overlook it as a destination on a sailing holiday. However, it could be a perfect stop for a day or afternoon, particularly for families. Velika Plaža (big beach) is a 700 m long sandy beach, with water-sports available, a few bars and volleyball nets; it could be just the break from boating a family need. There is also an array of activities to do around Omiš (fun for the whole family), like white water rafting, cycling and zip-lining… but we'll write more about that another day.

Island Šolta This recommendation isn’t so much about one beach but rather the island. The entire coast of island Šolta is indented and hides numerous bays and oases perfect for peace and relaxation. Coves and beaches are surrounded by idyllic untouched nature, Mediterranean herbs and vegetation, and more importantly for yachties – good anchorages. Small pebble-stone beaches surrounded by azure blue and turquoise waters await you in these bays. But, just so we name at least one beach, Stracinska is a gorgeous bay with a quaint beach and crystal-clear waters that give the appearance boats are floating.

Dubovica, Hvar Dubovica is a picturesque bay tucked away on the southern coast of island Hvar between Hvar town and Stari Grad. While this is a pebble-stoned beach, it is a gorgeous and secluded bay with crystal-

clear water. There is also a traditional konoba here where you can enjoy fresh-caught fish and local wine. Enjoy a slow and relaxed afternoon here.

Sveta Nedjelja, island Hvar Sveta Nedjelja is a small village located on the south side of island Hvar, just 12 km east of Hvar town and resting beneath Sveti Nikola – the highest peak of the island. This coastline of the island is dotted with numerous coves and fine pebble beaches where you can find peace and privacy. The southern slopes of Hvar are also famous for their wineries and exceptional wines. Be sure to try wines from this region or even consider doing a wine tasting tour while you’re in the area.

Stiniva, island Vis Stiniva is located on the south side of island Vis and is barely visible from the sea thanks to the high cliff walls that protect the beach like two guardians. Stiniva was voted the best beach in Europe in 2016 which instantly launched it to stardom, making it a bucket-list item for anyone visiting or sailing in Croatia. As we know, fame comes at a price – Stiniva bay is now extremely busy during peak season but arrive early or visit during the shoulder season (May, June, September, October) and you may get lucky and have this piece of paradise to yourself.
